Children

Children (ages 2 through 5th grade) are encouraged to begin Sunday morning in the 9 a.m. worship service. After “Time with the Children,” they may attend age-appropriate classes.

Sunday School: Each Sunday, after taking part in Children's Time during the 9 a.m. worship service, children ages 2 - 11 are invited to attend Sunday School on the Lower Level. We have three Sunday School classes: 2 - 3 years, 4 years - Kindergarten, and 1st - 5th grade.

Music Time: Each week, Kindergarten - 5th graders are invited to take part in Music Time from 10 - 10:15 a.m. directly following Sunday School. During Music Time, the children prepare songs to sing during the 9 a.m. worship service.  Music is a fun and new way to experience the important lessons taught during Sunday School.

Family Style Worship Family Style Worship is held quarterly in the Chapel on second floor during the Sunday school hour for families to worship together through story, song, and activities.

Acolytes & Worship Liturgists Serving as an acolyte and bringing the Light of Christ into 9 a.m. worship celebrations is something children grade 2 and older enjoy. Children can also serve as liturgists (readers) on four Sundays throughout year.

Bibles for 3rd Graders: In September, each 3rd grader receives the gift of a Bible from the congregation. This special gift is given hoping that it will be used by children in Sunday School and other settings and that it will become an important companion throughout the rest of their lives.

Annual UNICEF Collection: Throughout the month of October children save coins in special UNICEF collection boxes and then bring them to church following Halloween. And the best part is that the coins they've collected (along with other gifts from adults) go to help children and families all over the world.

Hanging of the Greens: On the Saturday before Advent families come together to decorate the church Sanctuary, Fellowship Hall and Chapel for the Advent and Christmas seasons. Decorating is accompanied by goodies to eat and a lot of community fun.

Christmas Pageant: A church-wide Christmas Pageant is held each year and our children participate by welcoming the Christ child with singing.

Bring-a-Bear-Show-You-Care: On the Sunday following Valentine's Day, children contribute stuffed animal toys to our annual Bring-a-Bear-Show-You-Care Collection which provides Madison police officers with warm, cuddly toys they can share with children they encounter in traumatic situations.

Pride Parade: FUMC is a Reconciling congregation: we welcome and affirm the full participation of all people! Our participation in Madison's annual Pride Parade is one way we advocate on behalf of gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender individuals and their families. Children of the congregation often join our parade unit and participate by riding in strollers, riding bicycles and tricycles, or walking the parade route and distributing candy or balloons to parade attendees. (There are always candy and balloons for the kids to enjoy themselves too.)

Other (Music, Fellowship, Worship): Throughout the year there are other opportunities for singing (children's choir and/or musicals), fellowship events, and opportunities for children to participate in worship leadership. Check the website, weekly First Church Kids email and the downstairs white boards for details.
